NPL seeks a skilled Pressure Oxidation Technician to operate and maintain the POX circuit in Papua New Guinea. This contract role demands safety focus, process expertise, and teamwork to achieve operational excellence.
The Pressure Oxidation Technician at NPL is critical to the safe and efficient operation of the Pressure Oxidation (POX) circuit within the mineral processing plant in Papua New Guinea. This role ensures the POX process is maintained within approved parameters to meet production targets while prioritising safety, environmental compliance, equipment reliability, and product quality.
The Technician will collaborate closely with Control Room Operators, Maintenance, Metallurgy, Laboratory, and Process Engineering teams to identify and resolve operational issues, support continuous improvement initiatives, and optimise plant performance.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to carry out the following key duties and contribute effectively to the overall objectives of the role and organisation.
- Comply with all site safety procedures, standards, permits, and statutory requirements.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to process safety, especially around high-pressure, high-temperature, oxygen, steam, acidic, and hazardous systems.
- Conduct workplace inspections to identify hazards, unsafe conditions, and environmental risks.
- Complete JHA/SWMS or equivalent risk assessments before tasks.
- Participate in isolation, lockout/tagout, confined-space, hot-work, and permit-to-work processes as required.
- Report incidents, near misses, equipment defects, leaks, spills, or abnormal conditions immediately.
- Maintain good housekeeping in the POX area.
- Follow environmental controls related to process solutions, emissions, residues, and chemicals.
- Operate and monitor the POX circuit per approved procedures.
- Monitor autoclave conditions including pressure, temperature, slurry density, flow rates, residence time, oxygen levels, and other critical parameters.
- Inspect autoclaves, flash vessels, pumps, valves, piping, heat exchangers, agitators, oxygen systems, and associated equipment routinely.
- Monitor slurry transfer and process flow through the circuit.
- Identify and address abnormal conditions such as pressure fluctuations, blockages, leaks, vibration, abnormal noises, pump issues, or instability.
- Assist with start-up, shutdown, changeover, plant isolation, and emergency response procedures.
- Maintain accurate operational records, logs, and shift reports.
- Communicate operating status and any issues during shift handovers.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate should demonstrate the following education, experience, technical competencies, and professional attributes required to successfully perform this role.
- Relevant technical qualification in trade, processing, chemical or metallurgical processing, or equivalent.
- Experience in mineral processing, hydrometallurgical, chemical processing, or pressure oxidation environments.
- Understanding of safe work practices in mining or industrial processing contexts.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary operations team.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in understanding process diagrams, operating procedures, and equipment data.
- Willingness to work rostered shifts including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
