Lessons from International Job Applications: Why Professional Recruitment Communication Matters
This article shares a personal reflection on the professionalism and respect experienced during recent job applications with international organizations by Cathlyn Kabui. It highlights key lessons on recruitment communication which PNG Recruitment Box values deeply.
Job Application Experience with International Organizations
This year, I applied for two roles with international organizations; one Canadian and one Timorese. Although the outcomes were not what I had hoped for, I am genuinely humbled by the experience and the way each HR team handled the process.
Timely and Respectful Communication from Recruiters
For the role with the Canadian company, I did not progress beyond the first interview. Yet within 72 hours, I received a personal email from a Senior Talent and Acquisition personnel informing me of the outcome. That simple act spared me the anxiety of waiting in uncertainty.
Regarding the Timorese organization, I applied just a day after the vacancy was posted. While the automated acknowledgment stated that applicants should consider their applications unsuccessful within two weeks of the closing date, the HR team still took the time to personally acknowledge my application and update me on its status.
The Importance of Professionalism and Humanity in Recruitment
These gestures, though seemingly small, speak volumes. For international recruiters to communicate with such respect—without excuses or delays—demonstrates how much they value the people who aspire to work with them.
Though I wasn’t selected, I walk away with deep appreciation for organizations that uphold professionalism and humanity in their recruitment practices. It reinforces my belief that how we treat people in moments of rejection is just as important as how we welcome them in success.
Looking Forward
I look forward to continuing to pursue opportunities with organizations that value respect, transparency, and professionalism—because that is the environment where people and purpose truly thrive.
